Virus detected?
WinUtil may occasionally be flagged by Microsoft Defender or other antivirus software.
1. Update your antivirus definitions
First, make sure Microsoft Defender or your antivirus software is fully updated. Outdated security definitions can cause false positives.
2. Still being detected?
If the latest definitions still flag WinUtil, you can add an exclusion in Windows Defender:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions and select Add or remove exclusions.
- Select Add an exclusion.
- Choose the WinUtil file, or the folder where you keep WinUtil.
Why does WinUtil get flagged?

Windows SmartScreen may occasionally block the file before you can run it.
Review your SmartScreen settings
- Select App & browser control.
- Open Reputation-based protection settings.
- Review the SmartScreen setting that may be blocking the download.
Settings that can affect the download include:
- Check apps and files
- SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
- SmartScreen for Microsoft Store apps
- Potentially unwanted app blocking
Toolbox opens and immediately closes
If Toolbox opens and immediately closes, make sure your network, DNS filter, firewall, or security software is not blocking github.com.
WinUtil relies on GitHub for some functionality, so blocking GitHub can prevent it from starting correctly.
VCRUNTIME140.dll error
If you receive a VCRUNTIME140.dll error, the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime is missing or damaged. This runtime is required by many Windows applications.
